Sonic Mania Review: Nostalgia For The Past
Sonic Mania is a two-dimensional platformer in the legendary series from SEGA. Download Sonic Mania and reach the goal, controlling Sonic, lifting Tails into the air, and coping with obstacles with the help of Knuckles’ force. Pass the classic zones, like in the good old days, and challenge the new bosses.
Graphics – 4/5
Sonic Mania is the reincarnation of the good old 2D platformer Sonic from the Sega Mega Drive console. It has classic gameplay and modern graphics. Sonic Mania is the game in 2D action, but this time with HD graphics in retro style. Even though some will be disappointed with the graphics, the retro style helps to keep the coloring of the Sega Mega Drive console even on a large HD TV.
Gameplay – 4.5/5
Sonic Mania has a lot of content. There are 12 zones, each of which consists of two parts. There are new gameplay mechanics while maintaining the best of the old ones. There are both old and new opponents of Sonic. There are many modes, but mostly these are variations of passing the levels together or competing with each other for speed.
Music and graphics, references to old games, and exciting bonus levels will attract real Sonic fans. The game was created with the direct participation of fans of the first parts of this cult platformer.
However, according to Sonic Mania review, this implies a few cons as well. With many borrowings, the novelty effect disappears.
In addition, you can play together with someone on a split screen, just like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 right along the same zones. A new movement has also been added – it allows you to use a spinning attack (Spin Dash) immediately after the jump.
Controls – 4/5
The controls in Sonic Mania are excellent – Sonic has exactly the inertia that it should have. You can use a gamepad, a mouse, or a keyboard.
Some gamers say that sometimes it is hard to control the game when moving at high speed. Plus, you have to be always on the lookout for enemies and be ready to fight them. With some maneuvering though, you won’t have any difficulties in passing the game.
Replay Value – 3.5/5
The past and the future meet in Sonic Mania – Sonic’s 2D adventure with stunning HD graphics in a retro style. Those who miss playing the games from the 90s will definitely appreciate Sonic Mania and will be coming back to the game again and again.
Others, however, who got used to modern games and graphics may find Sonic Mania boring. Even after giving it a try, many players today won’t come back to it.
Sonic Mania is a very interesting game. The soundtrack is also pleasant – it has both familiar tracks and new compositions. The first passage of each level may take a while, and if you consider the number of secret paths here, then it may take many hours to study all the game content. So, if you are familiar with the genre of platformers, Sonic Mania is a game that should not be missed in any way.
- Precise, responsive control, important for any platform
- Good graphics.
- The game is quite short – a dozen stages pass in about five hours
- Everything comes from the 90s, so it may be difficult for gamers of the Press X to win era
- The ending can be disappointing.
